What Do You Do When a Loved One Is Facing a Mental Health Crisis? Compass Health Center on TMJ4’s The Morning Blend

Two women on the set of The Morning Blend sit on a yellow semicircle couch, absorbed in conversation.

Watching someone you love go through a mental health crisis can be scary. You want to help, but you’re not sure what to say, or you’re worried that whatever you do say will somehow make things worse. The truth is, how you respond in that moment really can help them feel safer and less alone.

Megan Kurdi, MSW, LCSW, Associate Director of Adult Programs at Compass Health Center’s Brookfield location, recently joined TMJ4’s The Morning Blend to talk about how families and friends can support a loved one in crisis, including warning signs to watch for, common mistakes well-meaning supporters make, and what to say (and what not to say) when it matters most.

The interview also explores when to involve a professional versus handling things at home, and when to consider a higher level of care, like Partial Hospitalization (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs. Learn more about Compass Health Center’s approach to care here
