Project Description

Program Overview

The Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder & Complex Anxiety Disorder Track offers specialized interventions to support those patients who have a diagnosis of OCD or a complex anxiety disorder (such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, or Specific Phobia) that consistently interferes with successful daily functioning. Patients are introduced to Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) therapy, one of the most effective treatments for obsessive compulsive disorder and other anxiety disorders. Patients attend group therapy sessions and meet with their exposure therapist on a daily basis to create an individualized hierarchy that specifically addresses the patient’s fears and triggers leading to avoidance and/or compulsions.  Currently this track is only available for patients admitted to PHP.

Treatment Goals

Individualized treatment plans addressing psychiatric symptoms and therapeutic goals are developed for each patient by Compass’ multidisciplinary team. Evidence-based therapies used to help children develop more effective coping skills include Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and family therapy.  Family involvement is critical in exposure work as patients will be assigned homework that specifically addresses (and challenges) triggers for anxiety.  Parents will be expected to help monitor and support the child as they develop resilience through exposure work.

Families are required to participate in family therapy, as it greatly facilitates the child’s improvement.

Academic Support

Education services are provided on a daily basis in the child PHP during the school year to support patients and families in making progress toward their academic and related treatment goals. This includes time each day for supervised study, case management and coordination of care between the Compass treatment team, patients’ school teams, and the patients and their families.

We recognize that flexibility is key to ensuring a successful school transition, and your child’s team is in regular communication with school to adjust the treatment plan if indicated to best support your child.
