Is School Anxiety Keeping Your Child From Thriving? Compass Health Center on TMJ4’s The Morning Blend

Two women sit facing each other in conversation on a green sofa, in a warm, softly lit room with a striped wood accent wall, a teal wall with an abstract painting, and a small round table between them holding potted plants. One woman, with long blonde hair, wears a black dress; the other, with curly dark hair, wears a white dress and gestures as she speaks. The Compass Health Center logo appears in the bottom right corner.

No matter how many years of school they have under their belt, back-to-school season can be a major stressor for a child or teen. Parents may (understandably) be seeking strategies to help manage back-to-school anxiety as families transition from the typically more relaxed summer to the faster paced, higher-expectation routines and structure of the school year.

Brigette Kuykendall, Senior Education Specialist at Compass Health Center – Brookfield, recently joined TMJ4 News’ The Morning Blend to discuss the drivers behind school avoidance, coping strategies for children and teens, and how Compass supports families navigating this challenge through in-person and virtual care.

The interview also explores somatic symptoms that may arise during the start of the school year, how parents can partner with schools to make weekdays go more smoothly, and when to consider a higher level of care, like Partial Hospitalization (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs.
