Be proud. You’re taking the next step on your mental health journey. We understand that starting a new program can be overwhelming, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
Our Evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed to teach you new skills, terminology, and ways of thinking, helping you to achieve your long-term mental health goals. We encourage you to take your time, be patient, and ask for help whenever you need it.
If this is your first time attending a program at Compass, please note that it is a requirement to live in Illinois, Maryland or Virginia for the whole time you are in program.
This will include a daily schedule and worksheets/information needed for group. Additional worksheets will be available during virtual sessions.
We will be using the Zoom platform, which is free for patients. To maximize your child’s experience, we recommend downloading and using the Zoom app on a computer. Please create an account on Zoom with you or your adolescent’s personal email and ensure that they only use their first name and the first initial of their last name to protect confidentiality.

On your first day, you will be assigned a treatment team that includes a primary therapist, a family therapist, and a prescriber. You will meet with your treatment team members individually to discuss your goals and develop a treatment plan. You will see their treatment team members weekly, and may also receive separate emails from these providers with Zoom links for individual meetings.
As you begin participating in treatment at Compass, you will be assigned a treatment team, comprised of a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner, primary therapist, family therapists, and other specialists as needed. Your treatment team will be responsible for supporting and guiding you through treatment. One important way the team accomplish this is building a treatment plan with you. This plan will focus on decreasing the specific problems you are having (e.g., depression, anxiety) and increasing your ability to be successful in different important life areas, such as work, school or family relationships. The treatment plan will also specify your attendance plan and length of stay at Compass. The length of stay is determined by several factors. First, the treatment team works with you to establish the nature and severity of difficulties you are having. Next, the team uses cutting edge research and treatment outcome data to ensure that you receive the right amount and intensity of treatment to achieve the goals you establish with your team. Much like treating a medical condition, it is important to complete treatment as planned to ensure the problems are resolved and do not return after completing the program at Compass. Just as missing doses of antibiotics impacts a medicine’s ability to cure an illness, missing scheduled treatment days impacts your ability to achieve your clinical goals.
Your team will ensure that you understand the treatment and attendance plan developed to address your problems. In general, patients admitted to the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) attend program daily Mon-Fri. Once significant progress towards clinical goals has been made, you will be transitioned to the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). You will likely start IOP 5 days a week and gradually decrease in days from 5 to 4 and then 3 days a week as you prepare for discharge. Your treatment and attendance plan is tailored to your own unique needs and will evolve as you progress through treatment. It is important you partner with the team to establish and follow your treatment and attendance plan so you can achieve the maximum benefits of program and resume a life that has less struggle and more meaning than before you came to us.
By choosing to engage in treatment with Compass, you have taken the important step of prioritizing your emotional and mental health and wellbeing. This is often difficult to do while also juggling the demands of your day-to-day life. There may be times when you feel that you cannot or do not want to attend treatment. You may feel tired, anxious, physically unwell, unmotivated or any number of other ways. These are the topics we encourage you to share with your treatment team. It is all too easy to allow these thoughts and feelings to overwhelm you and prompt you not to attend treatment. We encourage you to come to program despite these feelings and to use your treatment team members to work through these and other emotions and to seek support. The days when difficult thoughts and emotions tempt you not to attend treatment are, in fact, the times when treatment is often most needed and when the most progress can be made.
If you are truly unable to attend program, due to illness or other reasons, it is important that you notify your team so they can assure you are not experiencing any new problems and that you have the support you need. When you call, one of your team members will partner with you to plan on making up the missed treatment day.
